Devotion 1/6/11

Mark 10:37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”

James and John wanted to sit upon honored positions within the kingdom of Jesus. Their understanding of the kingdom of Jesus was muffled by this desire to be elevated among their equals. Their desire for elevation likely came as a result of a misdirected understanding of the kingdom of Jesus. Many Jews in their day believed that Jesus was going to come upon the earth and remove them from the clutches of the Roman Empire, thus establishing His kingdom. James and John were so focused on themselves that they had become, if only for a moment, blinded to their purpose. As we are upon this earth, we are here to serve God. The magnitude of our service is dependent upon the understanding of the previous sentence. If God so chooses to elevate us in a position within this world, then we should embrace and bring Him glory. If God so chooses to allow us to walk a mediocre life, then we must embrace it and bring Him glory. If God so chooses to allow us to serve Him with a life that never brings any recognition from man, then we must embrace it and bring Him the glory. We must learn to be useable by God for His glory.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, mold me into something that can be used to bring You glory.
