Daily Devotion 11/15/11

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Not only did Jesus speak the truth, He also expressed it within His life. Jesus calls us to a denial of self, to a denial of our own purpose, to a denial our of own existence, and to replace these with His existence, His purpose, and His presence. But within this declaration, He has not called us to do what He himself has refused. The very presence of Jesus upon this earth offers validation; but as we factor in His sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary, there cannot be found any doubt as to His denial. Jesus denied Himself what was rightfully His, that He might come upon this earth and lead us to eternity. That which we are called to deny is nothing in comparison to that which Jesus denied, but it is essential nonetheless. As we deny ourselves, as we pick up our cross daily, as we follow Him with a completeness of heart, lives will be changed, and God will be glorified.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, give me the strength to walk at Your side each day I find my presence upon this earth.
