6/30/12 Daily Devotion

2 Timothy 1:5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Faith is something that can be passed down within our families. While we all have individual faith, the faith we see in those around us has an effect upon how we live out our faith. If we grow up in a faithless home, the chances are we will not have a powerful faith unless we work hard to flourish its existence. If we grew up in a home where GIANT faith was normal, we have a better chance at possessing the same kind of faith in our lives. The same carries over to our friendships. If our friends are strong in their faith, we will be strengthened in our faith because of theirs; but if their faith is fake, it will have a negative effect on ours. We must be careful to hold onto our faith and fill our lives with people who are seeking to increase their faith and trust in God. For if we do not, one day we might be completely lost in our understanding of God.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, allow others to see within me, through my faith, Your presence.

6/29/12 Daily Devotion

Colossians 4:7 Tychcius will tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.

Tychicus must have been beaming at hearing these words of Paul. To be considered a dear brother, a faithful minister, and a fellow servant of Paul, WOW. He was no doubt walking a little taller, a little prouder, a littler more confident, among the others, and who would have blamed him? To be placed within the same compliments, we would, ourselves, feel the same way. To be considered that faithful is to place us among the great people of faith: Mary, Joseph, Abraham, John, Peter, Jean, Sally, Robert and many others from the Bible and from our own lives. What we need to understand is simple, we can be considered a person of great faith if we will just choose to step COMPLETELY out in our faith. That’s all it takes; that’s the reality of faith, trusting in God in a powerful way for all things, physical and spiritual, coming to an understanding that we cannot walk without Him, and believing that He will never leave our side.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help my faith in You flourish to the point of its recognition within this world. Not so I can be elevated, so You may be glorified.

6/28/12 Daily Devotion

Matthew 21:21 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, `Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.

The debate over the literality of this verse will continue until Christ comes again. No matter your position, it does point out the type of power our faith can have if utilized. Faith in God is more than believing in His existence. Faith in God is knowing that He exists, but even more so understanding that He is capable of anything He desires. He can reverse any situation, no matter the severity. He can change any circumstance, no matter the depth. He can do anything as He sees fit. In some cases, it might be hard to believe this, for we cannot see it as a possibility, but it is right there where our faith must kick into high gear.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, expand my faith in You.

6/27/12 Daily Devotion

Judges 11:11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in

Jephthah was a mighty warrior. His brothers disliked him and caused him to be driven from their presence and the presence of their family. In his retreat from his family, Jephthah fled to Tob. There he bonded with a group of friends whose interests fell in line with his own. Some time later, the elders of  Gilead begged him to return home and become their commander, because the Ammonites had gone against them in battle. Jephthah was reluctant, because he did not have a great trust in them and their actions after the battle was over. Even within his reluctance, he agreed to go back and stand in battle as the commander of his countrymen. We have all been put between a rock and a hard place. We have all been placed within a circumstance that brought an uneasy feeling within our spirit. Even so, we must all do what is required of us by God. Sometimes, living by faith is hard, but God will not let us down if we stay at His side.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, keep me close to Your side as we walk through this life together.

6/26/12 Daily Devotion

Joshua 6:7 And he ordered the people, “Advance ! March around the city, with the armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

The story of Joshua is the picture of faith. For six days, God directed the Israelites to gather up the army, march around Jericho, and depart. On the seventh day, they were directed to march around the city seven times, and following the seventh time God would hand them over a victory against Jericho. Living within our time in history, we can only imagine how much faith it took to walk around the city of Jericho each day while the people were mocking their futile attempt at looking strong and powerful. That must have been difficult enough, but then came the seventh day. We can only imagine how bad the mockery had gotten by the seventh lap. We can only imagine how hard it was to walk in exact faith, trusting God for the victorious outcome. We can only imagine, but it is the same that we are called to do within our lives. At times, life will become difficult, but it is within these moments that we see the power of our faith and the awesome presence of God. So when life throws you a curve, when a situation carries you sideways, hold on, continue to walk in faith, and trust God to carry you through.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, guide me into the kind of faith that will not falter in the face of adversity or the foot of difficulties.

6/25/12 Daily Devotion

1 Thessalonians 1:8 The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it,

Paul was grateful for the faith of the Thessalonians. He was grateful for the love that flowed from their lives and their endurance that inspired hope within the multitudes. They had embraced the gospel and the One whom it represented and, in doing so, set forth an example of what it was to be model Christians in Macedonia and Achaia. They were well known simply because of their faith. Could there be any greater compliment? Shouldn’t this be the goal of every Christian? Our faith not only effects our lives, it has an effect on those around us, even many that we do not know. Living out our faith demonstrates not only our love for God, but also our trust in His provision, and that is what the world needs to observe as we walk with Christ. To be known by our faith is to be known for living the gospel. To be known by our faith is to be known for the presence of Christ that dwells within. To be known by our faith, this should be our desire each day we are blessed to live upon this earth.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, may I become known more by my faith, so You may become more known within this world.

6/23/12 Daily Devotion

Proverbs 20:11 Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.

Everyone is known by his actions. What we do demonstrates our likes, dislikes, and concerns. What we say displays the contents of our hearts and the truth of our minds. We are known for the exact person we have created ourselves to be, even if we don’t believe this is true. Many people hide behind a facade, a created image that they want others to believe is them, but in ALL actuality most people can see past the facade and into the real person. This is not to say that we can know all about a person without full disclosure, but we can certainly receive enough information to know with whom we are dealing. Everyone is known by their actions. What do others see as they glance into your life?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, give me a clear understanding of who I am. Help me remove the self-created facade that does nothing to advance your cause.

6/22/12 Daily Devotion

James 2:22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

The debate over works will never end until time as we know it ends. In dealing with this subject matter, James powerfully states that Abraham was considered righteous because he offered his son as a sacrifice before God. Now we know that this offering was not brought to fruition, because God delivered a sacrificial ram instead, but Abraham was willing to give back to God that which was given to him as a blessing. Abraham’s faith and his actions worked together to glorify God, even if that meant giving up something as precious as his son. Abraham acted upon and within his faith. Can the same be said within our direction? When others see us, do they see us willing to give up whatever we must to serve God? When others observe us, do they see a small bit of Abraham?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become moved to action.

6/21/12 Daily Devotion

James 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Being a Christian is the fulfillment of an equation set in place by God. This equation demonstrates our sincerity to the task set before us, but it also sets before the world our desire to serve God first within our lives. Here is the equation: Faith + Action = Christian. This is not to say that our actions reserve for us a place in Heaven, but if God has truly changed our lives, we will be moved to action. What are you doing for the cause of Christ? How are you sharing about that which Christ has done within your life? How have you been moved to action because of the actions of Christ within your life?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become willing to serve You powerfully and purposefully within this world.

6/20/12 Daily Devotion

Jeremiah 26:13 Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the Lord your God. Then the Lord will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you.

Jeremiah was told by God to stand in the courtyard before all the people that had arrived to worship. He was to bring to them a solemn message of change. He was to tell them that if they did not change their ways and obey the law of God, Judah would be come a city known as an object of cursing within all the nations. This message was not received very well, for its content brought about a desire to kill the messenger. Jeremiah’s life was spared, but is his message heard within our lives today? There is nothing that was said to those people within that courtyard that can be subtracted from our lives today. We must reform our lives and our actions, causing them to fall in line with the Word of and desire of God. If our lives are not reformed, if our lives do not reflect the Word of God, if our lives do not fall in line with God’s desires, then we will not like the Words of Jesus on our judgment day.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me understand what I must sacrifice to live for You, but also help me understand that whatever it may be will be worth it as I step into Glory with You.
