7/13/12 Daily Devotion

James 4:9-10 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. [10] Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Humility is the sign of a real Christian. We gain humility when we come to realize what we would be without Christ. We become humble when we place God in His proper position within our lives. The way we live our lives is very important, so important that James tells us if our lives are not being focused on God we should change our laughter to mourning and our joy to gloom, for true happiness only comes from God. Life can bring joyous occasions, occasions that will make us very happy, but eventually those moments fade away and become nothing more than a memory. The presence of God, however, the joy He brings, will never fade.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become filled with the joy of Your presence.

7/12/12 Daily Devotion

Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Our mouths speak from the depths of our hearts. Many people believe that they have to speak inappropriately to gain someone’s attention. They feel that a minor infraction from the mouth is allowable, as long as it accomplishes that which they deem as important. The issue arrises when we do not realize that these words have moved from the occasional getting someone’s attention into the normalcy of our everyday lives. How do we know what’s inappropriate and what’s not? Here is a simple test: Would you be willing to say it to Jesus?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, cleanse my mouth that it may glorify You.

7/11/12 Daily Devotion

Philippians 2:14-15 Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe

Children are very resilient. They are very good at adapting to various situations, even though some of these adaptations can be difficult. Adults, on the other hand, are a completely different matter. Most adults have become stagnant. They have come to a place where they are comfortable and refuse to change or alter anything that will remove them from their comfort zone. In saying we must become like little children, Jesus is saying we need to become less like adults in regards to our attitudes towards change. Change can be scary. But if we are willing to walk forward through, it we will become greater witnesses for Christ. If we can walk through it, we will become that which God has created us to become.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help create me to become a glorious witness for You, one that shines with Your presence and glows with Your forgiveness.

7/10/12 Daily Devotion

Jeremiah 7:5-7 If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, [6] if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, [7] then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever.

God rewards real change. When we are willing to make necessary changes within our lives, when we are willing to alter the manner in which we represent ourselves, when we are willing to become more like Christ, God will bring rewards into our lives. These rewards will not always resemble large amounts of money, fancy cars, or huge homes, for these are temporary. The greatest reward we can receive for our faithfulness, the greatest reward we can receive for our servanthood, the greatest reward we can receive for changing our lives, is eternity in Heaven within His presence.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me see that serving You will bring blessings to my life now and my eternal life in the future.
