9/29/12 Daily Devotion

1 John 2:25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.

As we experience the hardships of life, as we toil and labor in the workplace, as we trample through the halls of the education system, we sometimes fail to see the possibility of something more, something better. We question if all we are going through is worth anything. Sometimes, we wonder if we are just wasting our time serving God. Sometimes we wonder if, in our attempt to please God, we are losing out on the real side of life. While our actions, reactions, and the like, do help dictate our eternal placement, we dictate how it effects our lives. If we live to know that we have been promised eternal life, our lives will be lived with more freedom. If we live knowing that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us, then our lives will be lived with more joy. How are you living your life? What does it say about you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me live as one who will, one day, be blessed to spend eternity with You in Heaven.

9/28/12 Daily Devotion

2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Here upon this earth our bodies are subject to the processes of age. As we age, the time we have spent upon this earth catches up to us and causes us to creek, moan, groan, and crackle. As the days go by, we are caught within the confines of our flesh, but this one day will come to a glorious end as we transfer from this world into the eternal. Life on this earth is grand, but life in the presence of Jesus will be unexplainable, for words will be difficult to form. Understanding this, then, it seems appropriate that we agree with the words of Paul,”I would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

Prayer Starter:

Lord, how wonderful it is to know that which awaits us in Glory.

9/27/12 Daily Devotion

2 Peter 1:10-11 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, [11] and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

If we set out to live our lives out loud for God, what a glorious moment it will be when Jesus welcomes us home for all eternity. Upon this earth, many things bring satisfaction and joy into our hearts, but all of these will pale in comparison to the moment we enter into Heaven. This does not mean we should discontinue that which we are doing here on earth, for the necessity of our service can never be understated. But as it is compared to our entrance into Heaven, there is just no possibility of a realistic comparison. Are you assured of your entrance into Heaven? Only if your life has been given over to Christ and lived for His glory in accordance with His Word.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, may my life reflect Your purpose in such a way that glory is brought before Your throne.

9/26/12 Daily Devotion

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Jesus did not come to earth to experience life as a human. Jesus did not come to earth to meet someone famous. Jesus did not come here to make a spectacle of Himself. Jesus came that we might have life to its fullest. This is in reference to life here on this earth and life eternal. This is in reference to having a good fulfilling life here on earth and a marvelous eternal life with His presence in Heaven. Jesus came that, through Him, our lives would be saved from the wretchedness of sin, thus allowing us to live more joyously as we travel upon this earth, but also so we could share in the presence of His glory with all the other saints. Jesus endured a great deal to bring us that which we do not deserve. What are we doing for Him?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me come to a place where I am living out my life to please You and only You.

9/25/12 Daily Devotion

1 Corinthians 15:13-14 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. [14] And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

It would be a travesty for us to go through life as Christians, serving God, living out our lives for the glory of Christ, and then in the end find out it had all been for nothing. If there is no resurrection, then their is no Savior. If there is no eternity, then it is not possible to trust all that the Bible declares. We have all done something, something very specific, and at the end of this particular task come to the understanding that what we had just accomplished was useless. It might have been at school, at home, or even at work, but never when it comes to our faith. If our faith is not real, if the resurrection is not real, if eternity is not real, then God is not real. The evidence is overwhelming, God is real, and we can take that all the way to eternity.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, show me the power of Your reality within my life, that I might shine among mankind so You may be seen.

9/24/12 Daily Devotion

Jude 1:20-21 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, [21] keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

How long is eternity? Longer than any person could ever imagine. Eternity is forever, and Jesus will carry us into its reality. Many people don’t believe in eternity, and, for them, the shock will be one that is hard to absorb. Many don’t believe that there are separate eternities, Heaven and Hell. But as they become witness to the existence of the one they refused to accept, their eyes will remain wide open for all eternity. Eternity is real, and it really exists in two forms, Heaven and Hell. The residents of Heaven will be those who gave their lives over the Jesus, and the residents of Hell will be those who refused. Eternity is real. Where will you be spending yours?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me live my life in a manner that is worthy of the eternity You have in store for me.

9/22/12 Daily Devotion

Psalm 6:4 Turn, Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.

As we read those words, we have to come to understand that that is exactly what God did for each of us. He delivered us. He saved us, not because of anything we did or ever could do for Him, but simply because of His unfailing love. This knowledge alone should bring joy into our hearts as our spirits are lifted towards the Heavens. This knowledge alone should cause every person who calls upon the name of the Lord to hastily serve Him with the intention of allowing others to absorb this same magnificent love. This knowledge alone should revitalize the power of the local church, for it is the message of God’s love for all mankind. This message should change the world, but this will not happen until it has changed each of us.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, I want Your love to change me into a vessel that purposefully expresses Your presence within this world.

9/21/12 Daily Devotion

1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.

Why should we love someone other than ourselves? Why should we consider someone else as more important, thus extending them the kind of love that should only be reserved for us? Why should we have to extend love when we never receive it in return? As our scripture reads, we love because He first loved us. We extend the love and compassion of God because He did that for us through His son Jesus on the cross of Calvary. As for all of the other reasons we do not extend love, they are just excuses, and usually they are not even very good ones. We are experts at conjuring up excuses in an attempt to explain why we do not want to do something, but in the end NO excuse will be accepted as we stand before God in judgement.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, allow me to bring Your love into this world, because I know how marvelous it is to have it within my life.

9/20/12 Daily Devotion

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

We know exactly how we feel when we have allowed something sinful to gain a foothold within our lives. It eats away at our souls, it plays havoc with our minds, and it tears at our hearts. We know exactly how we feel; now we need to understand how Christ felt. Placed upon Jesus, as He was placed upon the cross, were the sins of the world. As we experience sin, we become heavily burdened with its presence. Now imagine how Jesus felt carrying the sin of the world. What we feel is minute in comparison to that which He experienced, but He did so willingly because He loves us, because He wants us to stand in the presence of God and be found righteous. Jesus carried a heavy burden. Are we carrying the burden of the cross within our lives?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me come to understand exactly what You endured on the cross for me, and help this knowledge transform me.

9/19/12 Daily Devotion

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 is one of the most beautiful verses found within scripture. It stands as a powerful declaration of God’s love. It is a magnificent picture of the love that God holds for all of mankind. It is proof that God’s desire is to offer to every person, every person, the opportunity to share in the expression of His love. It serves as a daily reminder that Jesus was willing to endure, so forgiveness could be offed to all. It speaks of the willingness of God to bring salvation to the world, that all might have the opportunity to spend eternity within His presence. If this verse does not make you emotional as it is read, if this verse does not make you emotional as you ponder it’s meanings, then there is probably a good chance that God has not made much of a difference within your life.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me understand and appreciate the extent of Your love.
