11/29/12 Daily Devotion

Matthew 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about : His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

The world finds it hard to conceive the avenue that God used to bring salvation into this world. There was nothing special about Mary and Joseph. They were average, ordinary people, people of meager means. They were not very special, beyond that of a normal family aura, except within the eyes of God. God saw in them what the world found difficult to understand. Knowing that, we must consider the following question: What does God see in each of us? God sees within each of us great potential, potential that can be utilized for His glory, but only if we are willing to embrace that which God has in store for our lives. Mary and Joseph could attest to the fact that it’s not easy to allow God to work within your life. But when you do, He will utilize your abilities to change the world.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, utilize me to bring a great change within this world.

11/28/12 Daily Devotion

Luke 2:4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

Joseph followed the rule of law. He took his wife and unborn child to Bethlehem to register for the census. This trip was not easy. Their journey was difficult, but Mary and Joseph were willing to do what they had to in order to lawfully participate in the census. As they were doing their duty, God used this opportunity to fulfill the scriptures. As we walk on the side of the law and on the side of righteousness, God’s Will will be fulfilled through our lives. As we pay homage to the laws of the land and embrace ways of God, we will make a magnificent difference within this world for the glory of God. Will you choose to walk within the laws of this world and the righteousness God?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me find the courage to walk powerfully, purposefully, and spiritually within this world.

Matthew 2:5-6 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ”

A “shepherd for my people,” that’s what God brought into this world. What an amazing gift! It was a gift that the world did not deserve, but a gift that was greatly needed. A Shepherd to lead the people, a Shepherd that would be the sacrificial lamb. The greatest gift anyone could hope to receive, the greatest gift any one person could ever give, His life for our sins. This offering, this gift, this sacrifice came with a great cost. The question for us is this: Do our lives demonstrate to God our gratitude for this glorious Gift, this wonderful Savior, this beautiful sacrifice?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me live in such a way as to reflect my gratitude for Your willingness to come into this world for the forgiveness of my sins.

Micah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Bethlehem was nothing to brag about. Among the clans of Judah, it was small and seemingly insignificant, but are we any different? Within this vast world, standing on our own, who are we in comparison to the vastness of this world? As we stand alone, we are small and insignificant, but not if we stand with God. Out of a small and seemingly insignificant town, God brought about a glorious change within this world, and out of us He wishes to do the same. Can you find the courage to embrace the presence of God within your life? Can you find the courage to walk along with God and the plans He has for your life? Can you? Will you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me find the strength to trust in You with all my being, to follow You with all my energy, and to follow You wherever You will guide.

11/24/12 Daily Devotion

Romans 1:11-12 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— [12] that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.

Paul was a master encourager. He understood the importance of lifting others up and acknowledging their efforts. In encouraging others, he touched their lives in a powerful manner, so powerfully, in fact, that their lives were transformed by his efforts. The effects of encouraging or not encouraging another person are clearly seen. As we converse with another, our words have power, and that power, whether it be positive or null and void, is observable within the reaction and future actions of that person. As Christians, we should long to become vessels of encouragement within the church and within the world.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, I long to share positivity with others. Help me see what I can do or say that will make a difference within someone’s life.

11/23/12 Daily Devotion

2 Corinthians 7:13 By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.

Encouragement is essential to any church or individual Christian. Without encouragement, we will fall off the path of righteousness. Without encouragement, we will fall back into the using of sinful mannerisms. Without encouragement, we will change who we have become and revert back into the person that once walked within our shoes. Encouragement does not have to be something elaborate, such as a parade, but it needs to be present, even in the slightest of ways. We can share our gratitude for a job well done. We can share how much a person’s faith has empowered our own. We can lift up an effort, even if it missed the mark. There are many ways to lift others up and encourage them to become greater servants of God. Have others been encouraged by you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become a model for encouragement. Help me become a lifter of souls and an encourager of hearts.

11/22/12 Daily Devotion

Psalm 138:3 When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.

Courage is something that everyone possesses. It is true that some people are better at developing and deploying their courage, but everyone can walk forth courageously within this world. For some, courage is kept stifled because they have not embraced the fact that God has emboldened all His children to powerfully present Him through their lives. For some, stifling their courage, holding back their fortitude, is done simply because it makes their lives easier, for they then believe they can excuse away their lack of service o to God. The Word of God is clear: God has greatly emboldened us to bring forth His gospel. Are we doing that which God has prepared as our purpose?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, You have created me with courage to share Your love within this world. Please help me walk within this courage, as I daily strive to make known Your presence within this world.

11/21/12 Daily Devotion

1 Corinthians 2:13-15 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. [14] The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. [15] The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments,

Excuses come and excuses go, but most of them remain nothing more than excuses. “It’s hard for me to talk to others.” I don’t know what to say about Jesus.” “I’m just a quiet type of person.” We can say all that our heart desires, but we are without excuse. God expects us to serve Him, and in knowing this, God has given us the power of His Spirit to embolden us unto His service. The reason we do not go forth and share the salvation of Christ is simply because we are choosing to refrain from serving. Unless we are bedridden, there are not many reasons that will hold up in the presence of God for our unwillingness to serve Him and the church. The power to make a difference is within. Will you allow it to come forth?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, embolden me to serve You powerfully within this world.

11/20/12 Daily Devotion

Luke 3:16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The moment we rise from the waters of baptism, we become a part of the body of Christ. This moment is the very moment when we begin our walks with Christ and our lives of service in His honor within the church. This moment is when we come to understand that we need Christ to guide our next step, our next moment in life. Knowing this does not negate the hurt that is experienced when a confession is made. Sins are washed away, and then a life of service is put on hold. So many have come to the cross and found Jesus, only to leave Him but a few steps away. Living for God is not something to be taken lightly. It is not something to casually do because your friends have ventured in that direction. Living for God is all about LIVING for God. Your life is a direct reflection of your heart. What is your heart sharing with this world?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, teach me how to become a reflection of You within this world. Teach me how to show this world how much I love You and how much You love them.

11/19/12 Daily Devotion

1 Corinthians 12:18-19 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. [19] If they were all one part, where would the body be?

A church of one has a limited future, but a church filled with servants has before it unlimited possibilities. When the body of Christ begins to live and function as a body of believers, the church will flourish. When the body of Christ begins to function as a body of purpose, the church will rise to the challenge and succeed. Church doors are closing all around the world. They have lost their capability to exist because they lost their understanding of service. We have been created to serve God through our lives and through His church, but without a complete and powerful understanding of this, our existence will not make a very big eternal difference.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, I understand what I must do to serve You within the church and through my life. Now please, Lord, take this understanding and help me turn it into action.
