3/19/13 Daily Devotion

Exodus 32:30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”

The Hebrews had committed a great sin against God. While Moses was atop Mt. Sinai, they became extremely impatient waiting for him to return. The people began to complain, for they feared that God had disappeared. They demanded the formation of new gods, gods that would be before them and guide their lives. Aaron gathered all the gold, melted it, and fashioned it into the shape of a calf. There stood before them a golden calf, a calf that they began to celebrate, a calf they began to worship. To say that these actions upset God would be a vast understatement. God sent Moses down to rectify the situation, and Moses spoke clearly and honestly: “You have committed a great sin.” How could God forgive them for their lack of faith? How could God forgive them for their lack of trust? How could God ever forgive us for the same? We have all forsaken the path of righteousness, for various reasons. Even so, God will, as He did for the Hebrews, forgive us and allow us to go forth renewed and restored.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, forgive me for all that I have done wrong and allow me to move forward in Your name.
