4/17/13 Daily Devotion

2 Corinthians 2:7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

When people are truly repentant, they will be overcome with guilt and sorrow. The presence of true guilt and sorrow weigh upon their hearts with such intensity that it causes them to lag. They lag in their thinking. They lag in their processing. They lag in their efforts, all because they are filled with guilt and sorrow. In other words, within their remorse, they are suffering the results of their sins. Paul teaches us that someone who is in this position is suffering enough, thus we do not need to add to their suffering. What good will it do anyone, ourselves included, if we stomp upon a person that has already been knocked down? What good will it do to remind people overcome with their own guilt, to harshly remind them of their infractions? This does not mean people shouldn’t be held accountable for their actions. It means they should be treated properly, in accord with the declarations of God’s Word.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become an example of Your Word, as I deal with situations that arise within my life.
