5/20/13 Daily Devotion

Acts 5:3-4 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? [4] Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

The early church members did all that they could to sustain and advance the movement of God. They cared so much that they were willing to sell their own possessions and turn over the money to the disciples. Ananias and Sapphira had some land and made the decision to sell it and donate the money. After the land was sold, they decided to keep some of the money for themselves, but told the disciples they were donating all of it. Each of them were brought before Peter, each separately stuck to the story, and each fell over dead as a result of his lies. While this is an extreme occurrence, it still gives us a clear understanding that the result of lying brings about an end result that is not desirable. In their case, it was death. In our case, in the end, separation from the presence of God for all eternity. Some might say this is a little harsh, but they should be reminded of the words of Peter, “You have lied not just to human beings, but to God.”

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me think about my words before they leave my mouth, for after they are released there is no taking them back.
