6/29/13 Daily Devotion

James 4:1-2 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? [2] You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

The following phrase is used in many different ways: The heart wants what it wants. This phrase is used because it allows us to grasp onto an excuse for our actions. We couldn’t help it, so it wasn’t our fault that we walked off the path of God and onto the path of self-righteousness. This simply not true. We walk off the path of righteousness because we have allowed our hearts to guide our lives. Instead of following God, instead of listening to His Word, we walk down the path of our own hearts. Now this is not bad if our hearts arecompletely focused on God, but how many times have we used that to justify what we have done? Life is difficult enough without our hearts getting in the way. Let us then decide, from this moment forward, to allow the presence of God to fill our hearts and guide our lives.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, fill my life with Your presence, that I might change the focus of my heart towards You.

6/28/13 Daily Devotion

Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Contentment does not come easy. In order to be content, we must be happy with the exact place we are found at this very moment. That does not mean that we can never have the desire to surpass where we are, for that would be ridiculous, but it does mean we should strive to find joy and happiness in every station of life. Our focus should not be concentrated on always climbing higher up the ladder, but in the One who gave us the knowledge to invent the ladder. When we focus our lives on God, we learn to be content. We learn to be happy wherever we are found, and we learn that life is greater if we focus on the Giver and Sustainer of life. Contentment does not come easy, but it is obtainable.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me learn to be content with the position in which You have placed me within this world.

6/27/13 Daily Devotion

Exodus 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Why do we always compare ourselves to other people? We look towards them as if we were competing in life. We want to surpass them in any way possible, and in many cases this causes strain upon ourselves and our families. Society calls this keeping up with the Jones’, but God calls it sinful. It’s easy to always want more or better things, but we must learn how to be happy with that with which we have been blessed. When we are looking toward others, when we are comparing ourselves to them, we forget how God has blessed us. Look around your house, look at your family and give God the glory for all that He has done.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become grateful for all the blessings You have brought into my life.

6/26/13 Daily Devotion

Titus 3:1-2 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, [2] to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

We speak ill of others purposefully. It doesn’t happen by accident; it’s not something that just occurred. Whether we understand it or not, what we say about others comes forth with a purpose, and that purpose is found within our hearts. Our mouths flow from the wellspring of our hearts, or in essence, that which is embedded within our hearts comes out into this world through our words and actions. This sounds so simple that even a child could understand it, but we walk forth clueless. We don’t see the true content of our hearts simply, because we don’t want too. What does your mouth reveal about your heart?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me have a pure heart, one that will affect the rest of my existence in a positive manner.

6/25/13 Daily Devotion

Zechariah 8:16-17 These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; [17] do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the Lord.

One of the greatest assets we have is our truthfulness. If we remain truthful, others will never question our words or actions, but this can quickly change. If we continuously release words that hold no truth, people will get to the point where they will never believe anything we say. This is comparable to the boy who cried wolf. At first, he was believed. But after misleading the townspeople enough times, they refused to help him when he really needed them the most. Our words define who we are and what we stand for in this life. What do your words say about you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me to speak with honesty and integrity, knowing that my words are one of my greatest assets.

6/24/13 Daily Devotion

Exodus 20:16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

People love to hear and spread gossip. Gossip is almost comparable to an incurable disease, almost. Gossip is something that so many delight in, but refuse to see its destructive powers. It’s harmless; they are just simple words listened to or shared, words that cause no harm, but fill a void within our lives. We love to share about the frailties of others, so we can feel more superior ourselves. We love to trash others so we can be seen as more upstanding or righteous, but all we are doing is setting ourselves up for a harsh judgement by God. Giving false testimony is sinful and destructive. It not only harms those we are lying about, it destroys our own personal witness. Listening to false testimony is equally as destructive; for if we refuse to stop it from happening, we are condoning its release into the world. We must be careful with our words, for once they are released they cannot be taken back.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me use my words to lift others up and bring You glory.

6/22/13 Daily Devotion

Exodus 20:14 “You shall not commit adultery.

Some people feel that the Bible is constricting. They feel that its whole purpose is to keep Christians from having any fun or fulfilling desires that are found within their hearts. Why can’t we have our cake and eat it too? Why can’t we just be allowed to do some things that we can’t really find wrong? If it makes sense to us, if it doesn’t bother us, if it doesn’t really hurt anyone, why can’t we do as we wish? All of our actions have consequences; all of our actions have consequences. Even if we see no immediate results or consequences, all of our actions have consequences. Take today’s verse for example. Maybe having an extra martial affair comes with no issues at first, but that quickly changes for all involved. When we break our commitment to another, we lose our ability to trust others. We know that we have not been trustworthy ourselves, thus we believe deep within our hearts that no one else is either. It’s that simple and that life altering. We are all better off if we just trust in the guidance of God’s Word.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me lean not on my own understanding but on the wisdom found within Your Word.

6/21/13 Daily Devotion

Romans 13:9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Society has drastically changed. We were once a society that got involved within each others lives. We were close to our neighbors, not just those right around us, but even those that were blocks away. At one time, we walked around our community and spoke to those around us, but now we stick to a select few people that we call friends. There are many today that do not know their neighbors beyond knowing their names, and this is a sad state of affairs. The Bible calls us to love our neighbors, and in doing so we will show them the presence of God. Why do we hide from our duties? Why do we refrain from walking into the lives of others? We do we not love all of our neighbors as we do ourselves? These questions are good, but the answers can only be personal. Thus we need to discover personally why we are not reaching out any farther than our small, close circle of friends.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me reach out beyond my close circle of friends with Your message of salvation.

6/20/13 Daily Devotion

James 2:11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

Christianity would become more popular within society if we were able to follow only those rules and regulations that we felt were necessary. We could remove a few from one book of the Bible, while adding some to another. We could get rid of completely those books that refer to much to how we are to live, leaving us only those that focus on eternity. Well, if we were do this, then there might not be much left to the Word of God when we were finished, but that is exactly what some people and some religions practice. They look only at the positive side of the Bible and avoid the negative, all in the attempt to have a better life. What they fail to understand is this: God wants us to have a better life here on earth, and in wanting this He has laid out before us, through His Word, the proper path for us to follow that will make this come to fruition. But even greater than that, He has also given us the instructions that will lead to a glorious eternity within His presence.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, find me faithfully following Your Word here on this earth, that I might have the blessings of an eternity with You in Heaven.

6/19/13 Daily Devotion

Exodus 20:15 “You shall not steal.

To take something that is not ours is displeasing to God, yet it happens every day. Many people, at some point, begin to believe that they are entitled, entitled to anything they want. Some people steal because they are looking for a thrill. Some people steal because they are coveting someone else’s property. Some people steal because they believe they deserve what they have taken, and still others steal simply for the thrill. It matters not the reasoning. Taking something that does not belong to us is wrong in the eyes of God. Even if we get away with it here on earth, we will have to stand before God and answer for our actions.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, guide me into an understanding that helps me realize how blessed I am, thus preventing me from seeking to take from others.
