7/31/13 Daily Devotion

2 Peter 3:16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Unfortunately, we live in a time within society where people seek financial gain from the gospel. They pervert and/or distort the gospel with purpose, to expand their plans for glory and success. The importance of good study habits within our lives cannot be overstated, for this is one of the greatest ways we can combat such people. A good minister will continually tell their congregation to listen and check. Listen to what he is presenting and check the validity and truthfulness of his message within the scripture. Someone who wants to aid in the edification of fellow believers will expect them to take the knowledge given on Sunday and/or Wednesday and verify its truth, not just listen and take it as the gospel truth. People distort the gospel for many reasons, but most of them are tied personal gain. What are you doing with the gospel that God has entrusted to you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me seek the truth of Your Word, from Your Word, as I study and embrace it on a daily basis.

7/30/13 Daily Devotion

1 Peter 3:16
keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

It may difficult to understand at times, but the truth is that not everyone is going to appreciate our existence. No matter how we conduct ourselves, no matter how well we demonstrate the ideology of scriptures, not everyone is going to appreciate our existence. While we may want to correct this seemingly ridiculous ideology, in actuality we can’t. Some people will not like us, and there is nothing we can do, with one exception. We must strive to become the best Christians we can, thus not giving those who speak against us a foothold of truth. We must seek to become more like Christ in our words and actions. Thus others will not be able to point even a finger at our presentation of the gospel. We must become more like Christ and less like the world, so the world cannot find fault with our claims to be Christians.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me embrace Your ways, allowing them to flow through my life as I strive to present Your presence within my life to this world.

7/29/13 Daily Devotion

James 3:16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

Unfortunately, the church is not void of those who possess a selfish ambition. Many people serve within the church so they can have their names lifted before the congregation, and if that doesn’t happen they become very irate. Is that why you serve God, to have your named mentioned? Well, if that is the case the Bible explicitly teaches that you have received your reward–so enjoy. Why do we want the approval of man? There is no clear, concise answer to that question, but in most cases we want instant gratification, we want the acknowledgement of a job well done right now. Who doesn’t want their efforts noticed? Who doesn’t want people to stand up and take note of their accomplishments? The confusion comes in the fact that so many want this instead of the praise of God. What motivates you to do what you do for the glory of God?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me release the need for man’s approval of my actions, seeking only to please You.

7/27/13 Daily Devotion

Joshua 3:16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea ) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

The Israelites needed to cross the Joran, but the the Jordan was at flood stage. Thus, there was no possibility of crossing. Joshua had asked the people to consecrate themselves and wait for the Lord to do amazing things among them the following day, and did He ever! God gave the Israelites specific instructions to follow; and in doing so, they would be able to cross the Jordan on dry land. As they approached the river, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant were to go forward and place their feet in the Jordan; thus causing the Jordan to part, allowing them to cross. They did exactly what they were asked to do and crossed the Jordan on dry land, but it could not have been done without trust, complete trust in God. Sometimes, we don’t know or understand completely why God carries us in a specific direction or down a certain path. That’s when we are called to simply trust, trust in His wisdom, trust in His path.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me to trust in You as I have never done before.

7/26/13 Daily Devotion

Psalm 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. [4] In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

What/who holds your trust? What/who do you rely on the most within your life? What/who do you reach for when life gets rough? What/who do you seek when fear roles into your life? For the Christian, it should be instinctive to trust in God, to reach for Him when life becomes difficult. It should also be instinctive to reach for Him even when life is great. Trusting in God should be as natural as breathing or walking. It might be labored at times, but we still have to desire to move forward.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, fill me with a trust in You that surpasses all my fears, all my troubles, and all my personal desires.

7/25/13 Daily Devotion

Psalm 32:10 Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.

WOW! To know that, as we powerfully trust God, we are surrounded by His unfailing love, that’s just amazing. We know that the Bible teaches that God wants to be part of our lives. But we also know that God has a lot of people to look after, a lot of people that are seeking His attention, and we wonder sometimes, does He really have time for little ole inconsequential me? He does. God loves each and every person within this world, even those who refuse to love Him. He is concerned about their lives on this earth and especially their lives within the eternal. Those who refuse the presence of God, those who reject the salvation of God, those who don’t feel the need for the forgiveness of God will live lives filled with woes, the biggest of which will come as they stand before God in judgment. Are you surrounded by the unfailing love of God?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, surround me, that I may feel and embrace the power of Your presence within my life.

7/24/13 Daily Devotion

Luke 16:10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

Most people have a tendency to trust in others over time. As they build their relationships, they are more willing to expose themselves and open their lives up to others. Their are some people that we would trust with our lives or the lives of our children, and still their are others that we have known for a long time that we wouldn’t trust to make us a sandwich. Trust is earned, thus trust could be considered a gift. Considering this ideology, God must have complete trust in each of us, for He has placed within our hands the greatest task of all, the spreading of the gospel. Are you living within the purpose that God has entrusted to your life?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, You have entrusted me with so much, I pray you find me living daily powerfully within this trust.

7/23/13 Daily Devotion

Isaiah 25:9 In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could, after going through something tough, project those same words? Has God ever carried you through a tough situation? Has God ever brought sunshine into a day that was focused on bringing to you into the darkness? Has God ever brought good news and an end to worry? If God has done these things and so many others, we should repeat these words powerfully and purposefully. Powerfully because we have touched by the Master’s hand, purposefully because the world needs to know exactly what God has done within our lives. Learn them, love them, and live out loud expressing the words: “Surely this is our God; we have trusted in him, and he has saved us.”

Prayer Starter:

Lord, You have been so gracious to me in so many ways. May I never take for granted the power of Your presence within my life.

7/22/13 Daily Devotion

John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God ; believe also in me.

Life brings with it many moments of concern and doubt. These moments have the ability to take control of our lives, our actions and our attitudes. These moments even help define who we are as Christians. Will we tread on through our situations, trusting in the wisdom and presence of God, or cave into the pressure of the circumstances. Trusting God is a simply stated philosophy or idea, while the actual implementation is slightly more difficult. Well, to be honest, it can be very difficult to trust in God, even as Christians. Our human tendency is to trust in what we can see and experience, or in essence, trust in what seems to be realistic. What we need to do as Christians, is make it a real part of our lives to trust in God no matter what is set before us, no matter what we go through. This is usually a trait that is learned and grown over time as we endure struggles and hardships, not one that comes naturally; but it is one that all Christians need to embrace within their lives.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me come to trust You at all times.

7/20/13 Daily Devotion

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

The Word of God is filled with various purposes that can be utilized in teaching, correcting, and training all people in the righteous ways of God. Another way to state this is the Word of God has the ability to guide and strengthen every area of our lives, EVERY area of our lives. The usefulness of the Word cannot be understated or ignored, for there is nothing that can be compared to its existence and its utilization. The Word is such a blessing in our lives, but so many do not see it in this manner. They see it as something trying to force us to conform to a set of regulations, when, in fact, it is trying to bring to us a better quality of life. What position does the Word of God have in your life?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me reach into the power of Your Word and seek Your will for my life.
