7/17/13 Daily Devotion

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Many things within this world exist with no visible realistic purpose, for they merely exist as a tool to bring profit to its creator and manufacturer. If we were to pause for a moment, we could probably come up with many examples: fuzzy basketballs, miniature baseball hats, orange shoelaces, and the like. While some might argue that orange shoelaces enhance their presence within this world, they would also have to concede that if they did not exist, plain ones would work just fine. What’s the point? Many treat the Word of God as if it were something with no visible realistic purpose. They do not believe it was inspired by God; therefore, it is just another creation of man utilized to make a profit. This could not be farther from the truth. The Word of God is, as today’s verse describes, “Sharper than any double-edged sword,” but this is only true if we believe in its inspiration and power.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, use Your Word to break down my own desires and my own will.
