11/2/13 Daily Devotion

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

How many times have we been in the middles of a situation and demanded mercy, even though we refuse to offer it to others? How many times have we needed to experience mercy, but refused to extend it in a similar situation? How many times have we offered our unsolicited opinion about a situation, only to state, “NO Mercy! If they hurt, you make them pay!” The realistic answer to all of those questions is: too many. Too many times, we have had the audacity to act in one way towards others and/or their situations and have a personal expectation for the actions towards us to be different. This attitude is wrong in so many ways, more than we could ever imagine, but there is one that stands out above the rest. This is not the attitude of a Christian. If we refuse to act in a manner that that reflects the presence and/or attitude of God within our lives, we should not expect God to bless our lives. As we are merciful towards others and their circumstances, God will be merciful towards ours, thus the old adage remains true: You get out of life exactly what you put into life.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help my life be filled with the power of mercy, mercy from You and mercy freely extended from me to others.
