4/3/14 Daily Devotion

Matthew 21:4-5 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

The life of Jesus was the fulfillment of prophecy. All that He was and all that He did fulfilled what was told about the coming Messiah, what was told about Him. Today’s scripture is one of those prophecies. In the ninth chapter of Zechariah, it was prophesied that Jesus would come forth riding on a donkey. Here in Matthew, we find the fulfillment of this prophecy, but what does it mean? We are presented with an image of power and gentleness. The power is found in the fact that the King is coming, and the gentleness is presented in the manner upon which He arrives. One would expect a King to come in full display of his position, and that would clearly not involve a donkey. The donkey demonstrates that the power of the King of Kings is available from His outstretched, gentle hand. It demonstrates that He wants to be part of our lives, not off in the distance.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, I am so grateful that I have the ability to reach for and find You at any moment.
