7/31/14 Daily Devotion

John 2:1-5 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Even if others refused to believe in Him, Mary refused to doubt. She still believed in what God had revealed to her concerning her Son. She knew that He was the awaited Messiah. She knew that one day everyone would come to know the same, but for now she was content to continue to wait on God, that is until she needed a little bit of a miracle at a wedding. For Jesus, this was His first miracle. Not the first time He had amazed people with His knowledge, but the first time that He displayed the power of God within Him. The first time that He allowed others to see what He was capable of doing. Maybe turning water into wine is not much of a first miracle, but it was a miracle nonetheless; and for Mary, it was a huge moment of validation in the midst of her family’s doubt.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me embrace what You have called me to do with my life, even in the midst of those who feel I am unworthy or unclean.
