8/20/14 Daily Devotion

James 1:14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.

The interesting aspect of this verse is the place where James makes reference to the fact that we are tempted by our own evil desires. So, what exactly does this mean? The evil that lives within, our earthly desires, our propensity towards sin lures us away from what we know is right, enticing us to walk a path stained with failures, covered with bad choices, and paved with selfish motives. The key point here is that when this happens, we are to blame. God allows it to happen, Satan brings it about, but we are to blame. If there was nothing with which to tempt us, Satan would cease. If there were no thoughts, no images within our heads, no desires hidden in our hearts, then Satan would have nothing to utilize. But since we are all human, he has a foot stuck inside the door of our hearts. But we possess, in Jesus, the power to overcome anything, anything, Satan can set before us.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me believe that Satan is a defeated foe with no power over me except that which I transfer.
