8/27/14 Daily Devotion

James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Upon reading this verse, our first inclination might be to consider allowing a harsh group of words to flow from our tongues, believing that we are justified, of course. The reason this verse might seem a little harsh is because it probably holds some semblance of truth within our lives. Our defenses go up when we feel the essence of who we are is being challenged. James speaks from the heart, the heart of God. He tells it exactly as it needs to be shared. He expresses what we seriously need to grasp within our lives, and this verse is definitely something every Christian needs to consider. Are we real? Do we act as we claim? Are we reading the Bible with gratitude and then doing as it declares? Are we reading, appreciating, and then doing what we believe is needed? We might think we are reading and doing, but are we really? In every situation? In all circumstances? In front of all people? Only we can answer these questions. What do your answers reveal about your relationship with Christ?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me become someone who loves to serve You, someone who loves to be Your child.
