8/28/14 Daily Devotion

James 1:23-25 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it–he will be blessed in what he does.

What kind of person could look in the mirror and not know who they were observing? What kind of person can look in a mirror and walk away, only to forget what they look like? Let’s consider carefully what James is stating. We all have an idea, an impression, of the person we love, ourselves, but how does that person compare to the true person, our true selves? When we look in the mirror, we look at a reflection of our essence, our flesh, but as we look we also consider who we are deep inside. Sometimes, as we look, we find ourselves picking out things that are not flattering, things that do not make us smile, but as we walk away from the mirror, after a few moments, we place those things aside and grasp onto a different reality, the reality that we prefer. This is exactly what we are doing when we study but put off the application. We look into the Word and see the reality of who we are, our true selves, but then we walk away and grasp onto a different reality, the reality that we prefer. When will this stop?

Lord, help me embrace Your Word and seek to apply its teachings to my life.
