8/29/14 Daily Devotion

James 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

Are you a religious person? When asked this question, most of us would provide an affirmative answer, but by whose standards are we providing this answer? Do our actions demonstrate the affirmative? Do our words demonstrate the affirmative? James sets a powerful, standardized, test in motion with this verse today. The validity of our religion is tied to our tongues. If we cannot keep a tight rein on our tongues, then our claims of religion are false. If we cannot keep a tight rein on our tongues, then our religion is worthless. Can the two be accurately tied together? Yes! If we are trying to be Christ-like, we will act and speak in a manner that represents this fact.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me keep a tight rein on my tongue.
