9/3/14 Daily Devotion

James 2:2-4 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Why is it considered an evil thought to prefer one person over another? Isn’t James being a little overzealous with this ideology? Well, James is “spot on” as they say in Britain. He has this ideology correct. His advice is perfect, because it lines up with the will and desire of God. God does not choose one person over another. He might choose to bless one person over another because of their willingness to follow Him, but that does not take away the fact that His love for all mankind will not diminish. What about the Old Testament? What about the people that God ordered erased from existence? Just because they were erased from existence following a directive given by God does not mean His heart was not breaking when the order was given. We must make judgments. Every day, we must make numerous judgments regarding many situations, but we must never judge a person based on our criteria. For if we do, we shall be judged in the same manner by God.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help remove from me any evil thoughts I hold in regards to another person or group of people. Let Your thoughts become my thoughts. Let Your ways become my ways.
