9/24/14 Daily Devotion

James 3:3-5 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

Our tongues are not the smallest of our body parts, but they contain great power. With our tongues, we have the ability elevate or destroy. Our tongues can be used to bring joy into someone’s life or destroy their reputation. Our tongues can be used to bring truth, allowing justice to prevail, or false testimony that brings harm because of selfish motives. Our tongues have great power, thus it is imperative that we carefully utilize them as God has intended: to glorify Him and edify His people.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me utilize my tongue to bring praises to Your name.
