10/14/14 Daily Devotion

James 4:13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”

Planning for the future is important. We need to see that we have a way to live when it comes time for retirement. We need to find a way to finance future vacations and/or trips. We need to plan ahead for many things. If we don’t make plans for the future, our future will come crashing down quickly. So if it’s important to plan for the days ahead, why is James seemingly talking about the opposite? He’s not declaring it ungodly to think ahead. He’s not saying it’s a bad idea to think about what is going to happen in the days ahead. What he wants us to understand is the need to prepare today for the arrival of our eternal placement. We should not be bragging about our plans, our activities, or our future in general if we are not worried about the moment we stand before God in judgment, for the latter is surely more important than the former.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me prepare for my future by becoming ready to stand before You in judgment.
