Acts 1:26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

The casting of lots was common practice in the days of the Bible. In most cases stones, similar to dice, were used to designate the choices involved in the decision. The lots were shaken up, usually in an urn or some similar object, and dropped onto the ground. The first lot to hit the ground was considered to be the choice of God. In this case, the lot fell on Matthias. Some would argue that there was no need to cast lots because the disciples already had a temporary indwelling of the Spirit given to them by Jesus. (See John 20:21-23) Some would say this practice is comparable to divination. Some would say they did exactly what God expected. They sought the Lord in prayer and cast lots to determine His choice. They believed God made the choice. We can call it anything we want. We can refer to it as improper or proper, but we certainly cannot deny their willingness to seek the decision of God. How often is that the case within our lives? The correct answer is likely, not often enough.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me reach for Your wisdom before I attempt to utilize my own.
