Daily Devotion 4/9/15

Acts 8:11-13 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

Simon did draw a crowd. He gave people a powerful sensation as they watched him perform his tricks. They had become a common element of his life, so common that, while they amazed others, they did not bring fulfillment to his life. He heard the gospel message of Christ through Philip, and suddenly he knew what he was missing. Or did he really? Simon was astonished by what he saw, but he did not see God. He saw an opportunity. Many people choose to utilize the gospel for personal gain. They see it as an opportunity to become elevated above others, to be lifted to a position of fame and/or fortune. If that is their heart, if that is what they want out of their relationship with God, they better enjoy their lives now, for the day will come when they stand before Jesus and He proclaims, “I do NOT know you.”

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me seek to serve You because You first served me, not because of any glory I might receive.
