Book Review: A Contrarian’s Guide to Knowing God, Written By: Larry Osborne

Contrarian cover

A Contrarian’s Guide to Knowing God: Spirituality for the Rest of Us, written by Larry Osborne, published by Multnomah an imprint of Crown Publishing, is a publication written in manner that helps “the common person” understand the word of God, while challenging the current system of spiritual development.

This book is divided into three parts. The first examines what is termed as genuine spirituality. It includes ideas such as: What Does It Mean to Know God, How Two Utterly Different People Can Both Please God, and Why Ambition Should Never be Confused with Spirituality.

The second part discusses spiritual growth.  It includes topics such as: The Way Most People Grow, How Small Groups Change Everything, and How the Holy Spirit Does Exactly What Jesus Said He Would Do.

The final part examines what God wants. It includes subjects such as: Blind Spots, Is Faith Overrated, and Chocolate-Covered Arrogance.

This is a particularly interesting book.  It challenges the traditional ideas of Christianity and church membership, while presenting new ideas that do not go against scripture just tradition. This would be a wonderful book for your library, thus it is a recommended purchase.

Book Review: Enter The Ring, Written By: D.A. & Elicia Horton

Enter The Ring: Fighting Together For A Gospel-Saturated Marriage, written by D.A. & Elicia Horton, published by NavPress in alliance with Tyndale House Publishers, is a book centered around bringing stability and happiness into marriages.

To bring forth a powerful message about God centered, God dedicated marriages, D.A. And Elicia openly share the struggles they encountered within their marriage and the effects it had on their relationship with Christ. Their willingness to be open and direct about their struggles brings a smidgen of reality to that which so many others encounter within their marriages, but might not have been willing to say it out loud.

As D.A. & Elicia elude to, many Christian marriages struggle because they are not paying attention to the necessary fundamentals needed to not only enhance their relationships, but also draw them closer to God. One specific area mentioned, which makes perfect sense, is the lack of a prayer life, both individually and corporately.

This book has the power to enhance the marriage of any couple striving to grow closer together and advance their relationship with God, thus it is a recommended purchase.
