8/20/13 Daily Devotion

Philippians 4:18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

The Christians at the church in Philippi had a reputation for generosity towards Paul. Even when no other church extended a helping hand, the church at Philippi assisted Paul. In praising them, Paul uses an Old Testament image of burnt offerings. God was greatly pleased when burnt offerings were offered up to Him within Old Testament times, and Paul uses that imagery to show the Philippians how grateful he is for their help. Can our gifts be compared to fragrant offerings? They sure can, if they are given with the right motives. God loves it when His children freely offer themselves, their finances, their abilities, whatever they can, to Him, His work, or the needs of others. When was the last time you, not expecting anything in return, used your gifts to bring a great blessing into someone else’s life?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me clearly see what I can do to reach into the lives of others and bring them showers of blessings.

6/13/13 Daily Devotion

Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

What makes someone a Christian? The simplistic answer is, of course, salvation, but there is more. Turning our lives over to God is the beginning of our journey. Once we receive salvation, we must move forward, striving to live out each moment of every day for the sake and glory of God while also striving to bring joy into the lives of as many people as possible. The Bibles states that we are to do good to all people, and unfortunately this is not an area where most of us are found to excel. Being good to some is easy, especially to those who share our lives, but expressing the same attitude towards those that are not on our A list is very difficult. While it may be hard at first, as we strive to express the love of God to ALL people, it will eventually get easier, even in the cases that are more difficult.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me strive to do good to all people, simply because of all that You have done for me.

3/20/13 Daily Devotion

Psalm 84:12 Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.

Who does not want to be blessed within their daily lives? Blessings in our work places, blessings in our schools, blessings in our homes, blessings in our relationships, who would not want to receive the blessings of God? Blessings captivate our faith and couple our trust in God. Blessings alter our moods and carry them into elation and joy. Blessings change us from the inside out, causing us to be pleased with our place in life and the God we serve. God blesses us in so many ways each and every day, but in many cases our senses completely miss them. Stop, look, grasp all the wonderful things God is doing within your life, and give Him the glory.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, for all the daily blessings I receive from You, I am truly grateful.

3/15/13 Daily Devotion

Jeremiah 51:5 For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God, the Lord Almighty, though their land is full of guilt before the Holy One of Israel.

How great it is to know that God is eternally present within our lives. God has demonstrated to us through His Word that He did not forsake the Israelites, even though they were not presenting themselves in a proper manner; and as He was with them, so will He be with each of us. As each day comes and then departs, we will find the opportunities to NOT glorify God. We will make mistakes, we will walk the wrong direction, and we will speak improperly; but within all of these moments, even though we would blame Him, God will not forsake us for even a moment. Could we ask for greater knowledge?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, to know that You will always be with me is a blessing to my heart. May I take advantage of our relationship in that Your presence will provide me the strength to serve You.

3/14/13 Daily Devotion

Revelation 2:4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

Even though the church at Ephesus had not grown weary as they endured many hardships, they possessed a trait that Christians should evade at all costs. They had forsaken the love they had at first. They were serving God, but not in the same manner as they once had done. They were sharing their faith, but not with the same intensity they had at the beginning. We can understand this completely, because we have all been in this position. We, for the most part, do not serve God with the same passion or intensity that we did when we first realized we needed Him, when we first realized that we were sinners. Oh, we serve, but not like God knows we can. This has to change, and it needs to change quickly. This world, more than ever before, needs us to powerfully present the message of Christ before time on this earth ceases to exist.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me serve You just as intensely as I did when You first forgave me.
