10/30/13 Daily Devotion

Luke 6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

How can we call ourselves Christians if we are unwilling to act in a manner that reflects our claims? How can we call ourselves Christians if we are unwilling to treat others in the same manner that God extends to us? To be a Christian in words only is to fail in the eyes of God. To be Christians in words only is to bring a false impression of God into this world. Being a Christian is a lifestyle choice, and extending mercy to others is part of this choice. As we show mercy to others, we are, in essence, bringing them into the presence of God, where they can find everything they need to have a better life and better eternity.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me act as I claim to be, Your servant.

10/26/13 Daily Devotion

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessings are promised to those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. But what does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? Who doesn’t know what it feels like to be hungry or thirsty? Even in the smallest of ways, we understand the feelings surrounding being hungry and thirsty, and when they arrive we strive to do anything within our power to make them vanish. We get a drink. We make a sandwich. We do whatever is within our power to erase that feeling. Hungering and thirsting for righteousness is having this deep powerful desire to feel and experience God. It’s a desire to surrender ourselves over to God. It’s knowing the need to empty our lives of everything else and fill it with the power and presence of God. For those of us who are serious about a relationship with God, this will be our desire. For those of us who are not, this will be of no concern.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me hunger and thirst for Your presence within my life.

7/5/13 Daily Devotion

Isaiah 16:5 In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it—one from the house of David—one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.

As we travel through this adventurous life, we come to discover that many aspects of it are understood only as they are about to occur. This, at times, causes us to move within speculation, walk forward in fear, or take chances that are unnecessary. When it comes to God, none of this is necessary. For the most part, God is fairly predictable. As we turn the pages of His Word, we can see what He has done in the past, what He expects of us, and pretty much what He will do in the future. While we will not always know the exactness of God’s move or the completeness of His ways, we will always know that as He moves us forward, He does so with our best interests in mind. Thus, He is mostly predictable. God wants us to grow. He wants us to expand our knowledge of Him. He wants us to trust Him, so He will move in our lives in the best possible direction for us and the expansion of His kingdom.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, help me trust in Your direction for my life. Help me see that You are ready to guide me in a powerful way, if I would only allow this to happen.

3/21/13 Daily Devotion

Isaiah 51:1 “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn;

Within our Christian lives, we are to continually be in pursuit of righteousness. We are to seek what is good and right, according to God and His Word. We are to reach for the good and release the bad. We are to strive to walk a path that continually glorifies God. Being righteous does not mean lording our lives over another. It simply means trying to be as God has directed, upon the path that He has called us to walk, while influencing the lives of those whose paths we cross.

Prayer Starter:

Lord, show me how to become more righteous than I am at this very moment, so I can influence this world for Your glory.
